All the Feelings Under the Sun book cover

This year, the American Psychological Association's children's book division, Magination Press, released All the Feelings Under the Sun: How to Deal with Climate Change, for tweens and teens. Written by climate psychology educator and consultant Leslie Davenport with beautiful illustrations by Jessica Smith, the text weaves together age-appropriate climate science paired with emotional intelligence/resiliency building exercises curated through a trauma-informed lens. It is framed with an understanding that addressing the climate crisis cannot be separated from social justice issues. Worksheets also guide readers to identify their values, talents, and interests, and become part of creating a healthier, safer world.

The book opens by setting this context:

Climate change isn't just changing the climate: It's affecting every part of our world. To help you understand the transformation of our planet that's happening right now, this book will take you on a journey through many different branches of science, our history, our societies and cultures, and into your own mind and feelings. As you learn about climate change, you'll also be learning about yourself.

Key themes include not only the scientific findings, but how various fields of science weave together an understanding of our changing world. It emphasizes the interconnected nature of all life in biological as well as societal systems, and ways to experience being with other-than-human nature. Practices range from mindfulness tools, art activities, reflective worksheets, identifying and working with thoughts and feelings, to action plans. Each chapter spotlights a youth leader or organization.

While it is written for kids to use, parents/caregivers are encouraged to read it to create an opening for family conversations and activities. It is an excellent companion to therapy, and the material can easily be adapted for classroom curriculum lesson plans.

A preview can be accessed through the Magination Press announcement.
